Christmas Eve captures the night before the best day of the year from my childhood. The excitement was possibly too much to contain for my younger self. The oversized tree decorated in nineties kitsch ornaments and too much tinsel that for some reason covered not just the tree but the walls and ceiling too, a Christmas Top of the Pops special on the TV, my Dad was the only one who demanded we bought chestnuts that he would teach me how to prepare for roasting until my thumbs ached and we'd always bring our dining table into the living room on Christmas Eve so that we could eat next to the tree the next day, I loved this tradition.
Then we'd get into our very best outfits which we'd picked out weeks before to attend Midnight Mass. Late as usual, we'd always end up at the back of our packed out church. I'd poke my little head out to catch any glimpse of the mass but especially when they would swing the thurible filled with incense of frankincense and myrrh. I loved the smell. After that I couldn't wait to get home to open one gift before bed.
Christmas Eve encapsulates one of my very best memories and though I may not do some of those things anymore, they remain some of my happiest times.
